12 Tazer Rules you Ignore at your Peril
December 3rd, 2008
1) Your taser is a weapon capable of inflicting personal injury and pain. When not with you, always secure your taser in a location safeguarded from children. Insure that you never store your taser armed. It’s properly called the “ready” mode. Don’t forget to check state and local laws before carrying a taser on your person.
2) Don’t ever point your taser at a target you don’t intend to shoot. A taser can inflict personal injury and a lot of pain. If you accidentally fire your taser at an unintended target, you might find yourself facing charges.
3) Fifteen feet is as far as the publicly available taser units will fire. In order to judge what fifteen feet looks like, measure it, walk it out and if you’re going to be using your taser for home defense choose firing positions in your home. In a perfect world your target will be 7 -10 feet away from you. If you fire at a closer range, the probes of the unit may not have adequate distance to separate and lodge in a proper position.
4) A taser uses an electrical charge and that charge is fully capable of igniting flammable materials. Don’t ever fire your taser near combustible or explosive substances.
5) Your taser is designed to render a target physically immobile. For this reason, never fire your taser at a target who is in water, as they will lose motor control and are likely to drown. A taser should only be used as a last resort when you are in immediate danger. There could be severe legal repercussions if used unnecessarily.
6) Your fingers and hands do not belong anywhere near the business end of your taser and don’t point it at yourself.
7) Replace the batteries if your taser is showing a low signal. If it’s not working properly it won’t be much good to you.
Never fire your taser at someone closer than 3 feet. Get back to a distance of 7-10 feet before using it.
9) The taser is designed to shoot from a level and upright position ( the weapon - not you) so if you want it to work, hold it properly.
10) Practice holding and aiming your taser in a safe location. You may consider purchasing extra cartridges to practice firing your taser and familiarize yourself with the operation in case you ever need to use it to neutralize a threat.
11) Aim for the center of your targets chest. It is the largest area on the body and will decrease your chance of missing.
12) After firing your taser, put put it down and leave the scene. Tasers discharge special identification tags that are traceable by police and there is a chance that your taser will be recovered and if not the company will replace it under the right circumstances. But you’re not replaceable - so go.
